The Natural Dyeing Process

We start off simply by enjoying as many avocados we can eat! Then we clean the pits and skins to prepare for color extraction. They are then placed in an aluminum pot with water and slowly heated for approximately 4 hours. By using an aluminum pot, we’re able to benefit from its mordanting properties which better allow the dye to hold to the fabric. The dye is then left to cool overnight to fully oxidize. While the dye is oxidizing the fabric must be prepared for dying, meaning removing any traces of dirt, grease or protective coating left on the fabric after manufacturing. This is done by scouring the fabric in pH neutral soap and soda ash with warm water. After an hour of soaking in the warm soapy water the fabric is then rinsed and left to soak in water until ready to dye. The next day the pits and skins are strained from the dye which is then reheated ready for the fabric to be added which is left overnight to fully soak. When it is removed, it is left to dry for a full day, then it is rinsed and washed ready to be worn!
